About DIPLOMAS IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE AND CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE’S WORKFORCE

The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) is a new system that replaced the existing National Qualifications Framework (NQF) with effect from 1st January 2011 (for NVQ L2 and L3) and from 1st April 2011 for NVQ L4 and the LMC (the two will be combined to form a new award called the QCF Diploma Level 5).

The care sector previously had vocational qualifications at levels 2, 3 and 4, and this has been consolidated into L2, L3 and L5 with the development of the QCF.

There are three sizes of qualification in the QCF:

  • Award (1-12 credits)
  • Certificate (13-36 credits)
  • Diploma (above 36 credits) - not linked to the 14-19 Diploma.

In the new framework you can have an award at level 1 or an award at level 8. This is because the qualification type award, certificate, diploma represents the size of a qualification, not how difficult it is.

It is a new way of recognising skills and qualifications, by awarding credit for qualifications and units (small steps of learning). It enables people to gain qualifications at their own pace along flexible routes.

The QCF is designed to make sure future qualifications allow a flexible, mix and match approach to meeting the different development needs of the workforce.

The Levels 2-3 Diplomas in Health and Social Care are aimed at individuals working with adults across all social care settings. The qualifications provide specialist routes for learning disabilities or dementia care.  Both Diplomas are a nationally recognised qualification based on the Health and Social Care National Occupation Standards approved by Skills for Care & Development. The award will confirm knowledge, skills and competence for individuals working with adults across all social care settings, such as within residential settings, primary care environments, domiciliary services, day services and supported living.

The Level 3 Diploma in Children and Young People’s Workforce is designed to build the knowledge and skills needed when working with children and young people from birth to 19 years. It covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas and is spilt into three pathways: Early Learning and Childcare, Social Care and Learning and Development Support Services

The Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services is aimed at individuals who lead social care provision in an adult or a children and young people’s setting, either as managers of the provision or as senior practitioners. There are six different pathways available.

Assessment methods for all qualifications:

Assessment takes place through evaluation of work-based performance, presenting evidence, witness testimony and questioning and Recognised Prior Learning.   A portfolio of evidence is produced which demonstrates that the candidate can perform to the level described. Participants will all have a vocationally competent QCF Diploma assessor who will help assemble the portfolio and prepare for assessment. In addition the candidates will have access to email and telephone support throughout their QCF Diploma programme together with resources as required.

Entry Requirements:

Level 2and Level 3 courses are open to candidates at any age, of either gender and there are no entry barriers on the grounds of race, creed or academic attainment in learning. However, candidates must be employed in a workplace relevant to the occupational standards for Health and Social Care to enable them to complete the qualification successfully.  Level 3 courses would be relevant to candidates who work without direct supervision.

Level 5 courses are open to candidates aged 19 and over, of either gender and there are no entry barriers on the grounds of race, creed or academic attainment in learning. However, candidates must be employed in a workplace relevant to the occupational standards for Health and Social Care to enable them to complete the qualification successfully and be working as a manager or senior Practioner.
